THE maniac magpie of Narrabeen has started swooping early this year and Warringah Council is warning residents to be wary of the vicious bird.
The council has put up signs near the Narrabeen shops warning people about the magpie, which likes to swoop mothers with prams.
It also wants to know of any other swooping hotspots so it can signpost these as well.
The public can report the hotspots by calling the council on 9942 2111.

Warringah environmental operations manager Adam Burrowes said the council was taking a proactive approach this year so people could better protect themselves.
He said that a warmer than expected winter may have resulted in an early start to the magpie season.
"We have already had one complaint about one near Narrabeen shops about two weeks ago," he said.
Temperatures in June and July have been about one degree higher than average this year, according to a Bureau of Meteorology spokesman.
Magpie season does not usually start until late August or early September. It generally ends in October.
Adult male magpies, which are a protected species, will often defend their territory by swooping down on people (particularly cyclists) and pets if they feel their nests, eggs or young are under threat.
Other species that were prone to swooping include the red wattlebird, grey butcherbird, masked lapwing and kookaburra.
